The Challenge: Filtering Smoke Without Killing the Taste—or the Production Line
Cigarette smoke is a hot, complex aerosol carrying thousands of compounds. Filter manufacturers face a tight balancing act: remove enough harmful micro-pollutants—polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, volatile nitrosamines, and harsh phenolics—to meet evolving regulatory expectations, without stripping the volatile flavorants that define brand identity.
At the same time, modern filter rod makers run at high speed. Carbon that is too soft crumbles under mechanical stress, generating fines that clog cellulose acetate tow and halt production. Carbon that is too mild leaves irritants in the smoke stream, creating a harsh draw and consumer rejection. The margin for error is narrow, and the carbon must perform in both the gas phase and on the factory floor.
How PureStar Does It: Hard Coconut Shell Carbon That Targets the Bad Stuff
We start with select coconut shell material—naturally harder and lower in ash than coal. Controlled steam activation builds a micropore structure sized for smoke-phase toxins, not flavor volatiles. The result: harmful compounds get trapped, desirable aromatics pass through.
For cavity filters (solid carbon plug), CFV granular coconut shell carbon delivers >95% hardness and <5% ash for clean plug formation with no metallic aftertaste. For Dalmatian filters (carbon dispersed in tow), PLC-370 & PLC-470 pellet carbons feed smoothly at high speed thanks to uniform 3 mm and 4 mm geometry and minimal dust. Where higher capacity is needed, CTC-100 steps in with CTC >100% while keeping the same hard, low-ash foundation.
